Look to this day For it is life: The very life of life. In its brief course Lie all the realities and truths of existence: The joy of growth The splendour of action The glory of power. For yesterday is but a memory And tomorrow is only a vision But today well lived Makes every yesterday a memory of happiness And very tomorrow a vision of hope. Look well therefore to this day The Indian Dramatist - Kalidasa Reading this poem is a great way to start the day. In my experience as a counsellor it has helped couples with relationship problems, and well as individuals suffering from depression, anxiety, stress. In fact I give a copy of this poem to all my clients. There are so many words in it that help to prime us for a good day - joy, life, splendour, glory, vision, hope and so on. In my article last year on priming words I pointed out research that showed how words affect behaviour. Volunteers unknowingly primed with words related to ageing walked slower while others primed with words related to energy and vitality walked faster. Other volunteers primed with words relating to politeness behaved very differently to those primed with assertiveness words. So why not prime yourself each day with this poem but perhaps go a bit further and add a list of words that are important for you. Colin Sutherland |
